Secrets and Lies is the fifth episode of the first season of the Starz original crime drama BMF.[1] It aired on October 24, 2021.
Synopsis[]
Meech and Terry devise a multi-layered plan to reclaim what is rightfully theirs; Detective Lopez's murder investigation begins to heat up.
Plot[]
Lucille instructs young Terry to take a note to his teacher and explain to her that he was absent because he wasn't feeling well, but in actuality, their lights were cut off. Meanwhile, young Nicole sits at the table, supposedly doing homework when Charles passes by, but she's actually reading comics. Charles then heads upstairs, where he lies to Lucille about how good she looks in her outfit.
Karen takes Terry, Lucille, and Charles to a deposition with the hospital's lawyer to discuss Terry's eye and any possible malpractice. She advises Terry to answer only what he knows for a fact, but when the lawyer displays photos which indicate that Terry has been dealing with Meech, Karen decides to suspend the deposition.
Meech arrives at the shop to discover that Pat already has a new bodyguard after killing Rock. Meech only came to pay back what he owes, revealing to Pat that he and Tee are ready to part ways. Pat initially attempts to prevent Meech from leaving from up under him, but when Meech calls him out for getting high off his own product, Pat punches Meech in the stomach and banishes him.
Zoe awakens Lamar and Monique from their sleep and asks if Lamar can pick her up from school later that evening, though he tells her that it's up to Monique, who explains that Lamar isn't exactly punctual, but Lamar insists he will be moving forward and promises to pick Zoe up on time. He and Monique then proceed to have sex while Zoe makes them breakfast.
Terry isn't sure if he should accept the money the hospital is offering. He can barely see out of his eye and wants the hospital to be held accountable. While Meech understands this, he fears that if Terry proceeds, it will put their entire operation under a microscope. With Pat having cut them off and Lamar having stole their stash, they need money fast in order to get in with Big L. So, Meech devises a plan to get their stuff back from Lamar.
Meech puts his plan into action and picks up Zoe from school, claiming that Monique sent him.
Lamar waits for Zoe outside of the school, but she never comes out. Just when he begins to panic, Sockie informs him that they have Zoe and that she will be safely returned to him in exchange for the stash he stole from them. Panicked, Lamar makes a call to the crew.
Meech and Zoe eat fries in the parking lot near Coney's. Meech explains that he'll be looking after Zoe for the afternoon, but when she starts to become anxious, Meech tells her that he's going to introduce her to a friend of his and that they'll even go for ice cream afterwards.
Lucille asks Terry about the photos presented during the deposition and if he's dealing with Meech. Terry lies and says that he isn't, but Charles isn't convinced. Karen then reveals to the Flenorys that the hospital is making an offer for $25,000. While Charles is willing to accept the offer, Lucille wants them to be held accountable. Between the photos and the fact that Terry tried to leave the hospital and fell, Karen believes they should at least consider the offer. If they go to trial and the jury decides against them, they could get nothing.
B-Mickie and Kato are laying in bed together when she gets a call from Meech, who tells her to meet him at her place.
Lamar rallies 12th Street and instructs them to find out where Meech and Terry live. However, Tiny is more concerned with the time they would lose on the street than he is with Zoe's well-being. He reminds Lamar that their new mandate is business first. When Tiny turns his back, Lamar takes off his belt and wraps it around Tiny's neck, nearly choking him to death.
Commander Mars watches from the observation room as Detectives Bryant and Lopez interview a witness who claims he saw someone put Jay Mo into the back of a car. Mr. May has a way with numbers and explains that the man he saw with Jay Mo was 6'2”, brown-skinned, and 28 inches across the chest. This man put Jay Mo into a Ford LTD. Lopez then shows Mr. May a line-up, but he doesn't identify anyone. On his way out, Mr. May gives Bryant a suspecting look.
Lucille and Charles discuss the $25,000 settlement from the hospital, which Lucille refuses to accept. However, it's at least enough to put Terry through school and get him out from under Meech's thumb. Between them scaring Terry for possibly the rest of his life and their attempt to ruin his reputation, Lucille demands that they pay, regardless of Charles' input since he decided to move out.
Meech and Terry intend to leave Zoe with Kato, but she's reluctant, explaining that she isn't good with kids. Meech explains that all she has to do is keep Zoe entertained for a few hours. Kato then gets a call from Lamar, which she takes away from the listening ears of Meech and Terry. Lamar is frantic and asks Kato if she's heard anything about Zoe, but she claims that she hasn't. By the time Kato exits the room, Meech and Terry are gone, having left her with Zoe.
Terry warns Meech that kidnapping Zoe was a bad idea, as it makes their own family liable to be attacked, but Meech reminds him that Lamar doesn't know where they live. It was either taking Zoe or killing Lamar; he chose the option with less blow back.
Monique shows up at Lamar's place in search of Zoe, but he reveals that she was taken by Meech, leading Monique to suspect that Zoe's abduction is because of Lamar's war with the Flenory brothers. Slick interrupts to inform Lamar that the search thus far has been unsuccessful. They've searched everywhere, but no one knows where Terry and Meech lives.
The autopsy report confirms Jay Mo died from a single gunshot to the head, but Lopez reveals to Bryant that Jay Mo has two pierced ears and that they only found a single diamond stud, meaning his killer could have possibly stolen the other.
Lamar shows up at Kato's unexpectedly and demands to know where Zoe is, suspecting that Kato is lying to him, but she insists that Zoe isn't there. Lamar checks every room in the house, but she is nowhere to be found. Unbeknownst to Lamar, Meech arrived just moments before and took Zoe, who is ready to go home, but Meech stalls her with the promise of ice cream. Lamar decides to call Meech's bluff and tells him he has no intentions of giving them their stash back and that he can do whatever he wants with Zoe.
Terry is followed by Slick and two other goons from 12th Street to a local auto shop. Unbeknownst to them, it is a trap. Sockie, Dink, and Hoop run up on Slick, who has a limp from being shot, and put him in the back of Terry's trunk.
Slick is taken to a warehouse where Terry and B-Mickie await. They restrain him to a chair and torture him for the location of the stash they stole. When Slick refuses to offer up an answer, Terry and B-Mickie proceed to beat him.
Bryant searches his car for Jay Mo's missing ear ring, which he finds, but is startled by Lopez, who questions what he's doing. Bryant claims that he's simply looking for his house keys.
Meech arrives at the warehouse to find Slick bloody and bruised. He orders Terry and B-Mickie to untie Slick, who Meech recognizes as an old head who's tougher than most. He then takes Slick to see Zoe, who is just outside of the warehouse, sitting in Meech's car. Meech gives Slick a choice: Either he can reveal the location of the dope and take Zoe home or Meech will cut Zoe's head off and mail it back to Lamar with a note that says Slick had a chance to save her. And so, Slick relents and reveals that their dope is on 12th Street and Harper Ave.
Monique returns home upset and enraged. When she hears a message on her answering machine from Meech, Monique loses her composure and begins thrashing the house.
Slick arrives at Lamar's with Zoe, who rushes into his arms. As Lamar prepares to take Zoe home, Slick tells him that he got the address for the Flenorys.
Terry is still struggling with whether or not he should settle with the hospital. His family is at odds, and Terry isn't sure what to do. What they're offering, he and Meech make in a day. However, LaWanda admits that it wouldn't be a bad idea to have some money of Terry's own, away from the drug business. She doesn't know if doing everything with Meech is what's best for them. Baby Terry then begins crying, and LaWanda goes to check on him.
Lamar shows up at Monique's with Zoe. Monique embraces her and slams the door in Lamar's face, telling him to stay away from her.
Pat calls Bryant with a proposition. He's hoping that Bryant would be willing to work for him, same as he works for Meech, which Bryant declines before realizing that Meech must've ended his relationship with Pat, who is offering him information and even more money than Meech ever paid. However, Bryant turns down his offer and warns Pat that the next time their paths cross, it won't be as peaceful.
Meech meets with Tiny in a parking lot near the Northland center, where Meech supplies him with drugs. If it's as good as he claims, Tiny says that he knows some people outside the hood who may even be interested. Meech then questions why Tiny is even working with him, given he was raised in Ecorse. Tiny explains that he's a businessman before anything else and that he isn't concerned with street politics.
Terry and Roland are sitting on the front porch when Meech arrives with the cash to get them in with Big L. It is then that Terry reveals that Big L only wants to deal with him directly, as Meech is too flashy, which Terry agrees with. As he leaves, Meech asks Roland if he also thinks that he's too flashy, but Roland has known them long enough to know not to get caught up with their arguing.
Detectives Bryant and Lopez arrive at Mr. May's after he called, claiming that he remembered something else about the guy he saw put Jay Mo in a car, but when they arrive, they learn that Mr. May left town.
Meech and Bryant meet at a gas station, where they discuss the fact that Meech sent Mr. Mays away and how their partnership is no more, as Bryant returns Meech's money and pulls off, unaware that he is being surveyed by Lopez.
Meech arrives home to find that the meeting went well with Big L, who gave them five bricks. This is their token to independence, but Terry is starting to get tired of the drug game and all the bad that comes with it, like kidnapping Zoe and going to war with Lamar. Lucille overhears then from the hallway, in complete disbelief.
