Monique is a strong single mom determined to give her daughter a better life. When it comes to being a parent, she’s a practical provider. Her love life, however, is a bit more complicated. She's in a romance with Meech when Lamar, who she hasn't seen for two years, is released from jail. Upon his return, he slowly makes his way back into her and Zoe's life. And just as it seems they could live happily as a family, Lamar's ties to the street put both Monique and her daughter in danger.

Lamar's return[]

Monique and Meech have sex at her place after he is kicked out of his parents' house. She questions why he still lives at home when all he and his parents ever do is fight. Meech replies that it's how they show their love, which by Monique's account is dysfunctional. While Meech makes a call, Monique goes to answer the door. It's Lamar, who she hasn't seen in two years. However, he's simply come to see his daughter, but Monique claims that Zoe isn't his. However, Monique tells Lamar that she'll consider allowing him to see Zoe after he gets back on his feet. Before leaving, he hands Monique a bracelet and asks her to give it to Zoe.^[1]

Monique confronts Lamar after learning he visited Zoe at school without her permission, explaining that Zoe wasn't aware that Lamar was out. Monique reminds him that he isn't Zoe's father. She only allowed her daughter to call him that when they were together, but they aren't related by blood. Zoe thought that Lamar was sick in the hospital for the last two years and prayed for him every night. While Lamar may be trying to do what's best for their family, Monique wants nothing to do with him. However, the following day, after Lamar apologies to Monique, claiming that he simply wants to see them, Monique agrees to talk with Zoe.^[2]

Lamar comes over and plays a game of Monopoly with Zoe. After a while, Monique instructs Zoe to go do her homework, but not before giving Lamar a hug, who she refers to as "dad." Moving forward, Monique asks for a heads-up whenever Lamar plans on coming over. She fears that he could get sent away again, breaking Zoe's heart yet again, but Lamar assures her that he won't allow anything to happen to either of them. However, as she grows closer to Lamar, she distances herself from Meech, who shows up at her home unexpectedly, which results in a confrontation between him and Lamar, one that escalates to the point of Meech grabbing his gun.^[3]

After reading Zoe a bedtime story, Lamar gifts Monique a diamond necklace, and they have sex on the couch.^[4]

Monique shows up at Lamar's place in search of Zoe after she reluctantly allowed him to pick her up at school, but they never returned home. From Lamar, she learns that Zoe was taken by Meech, leading Monique to suspect that Zoe's abduction is because of Lamar's war with the Flenory brothers. Monique returns home upset and enraged. When she hears a message on her answering machine from Meech, Monique loses her composure and begins thrashing the house. Fortunately, Lamar arrives later that night with Zoe. Monique embraces her and slams the door in Lamar's face, telling him to stay away from her.^[5]

Breaking up with Lamar[]

Lamar shows up at Monique's hoping for another chance, but she refuses to let him in. And when she threatens to file a restraining order, he becomes enraged and grabs her through the bars, but she escapes his grasp and locks the door. Lamar frantically bangs on the cage and door, only stopping when he notices Zoe watching from the window.^[6]

Monique returns home to find Lamar bleeding in her bathroom after having broken in. He covers her mouth and tells her that all he needs is a day to patch himself up. When Monique threatens to call the police and hits his wounded arm, Lamar begins beating Monique until Zoe intervenes, forcing Lamar to flee. Meech arrives at Monique's not long after to find her beaten and bruised. She still doesn't forgive him for taking Zoe, but at the moment, she's more upset with Lamar, who Monique reveals is probably camping out with his cousin near Forman Park.^[7]
