Biography[]
Kicking Meech out[]
After kicking Meech out for bringing a gun in the house and learning that their house is in foreclosure because they're behind on the mortgage, Lucille is confronted by Charles. She explains that she has to pay all the bills, as well as buy food and clothes. And it's never enough, which is why she went out and got the job at Wendy's, which was going fine until the car broke down, resulting in them falling behind. Given their current dilemma, Charles doesn't think they'll be able to send Nicole on her field trip, but Lucille refuses to allow her to suffer because of their mess. She's sick of living like this, but Charles insists that he'll figure it out. He then kisses Lucille and carries her upstairs in his arms. The following day, Lucille encourages Meech to either set a better example for Terry or leave him alone altogether.[1]
Terry's shooting[]
Lucille and Charles arrive at Downriver Memorial Hospital with Nicole after learning that Terry was shot, which Lucille suspect may have something to do with Meech's drug dealing. After Terry has his first surgery, they learn that he has an infection and may be permanently blind in one eye. Charles doesn't know what they'll do if something happens to Terry's sight. Lucille is, however, just thankful he's alive and doesn't believe they have the right to ask for anymore. For a long time now, Charles has been saying that Meech is a bad influence on Terry, and he needed to be out of the house. However, Lucille refuses to let him go, as she won't be able to live with herself should something happen to Meech. Instead, she prays that the lord would enter Meech's heart and inspire him to leave the streets alone.[2]
Lucille and Charles host a welcome home party for Terry, for which they invite Pastor Swift. After informing Charles that they're out of time with the bank, they are visited by Detectives Bryant and Lopez, who have come to question Terry, but he insists that he doesn't remember anything. Lucille doesn't appreciate how they're questioning Terry as if he's a suspect and asks them to leave. While Lucille loves him, one day, he's going to have to learn to listen to her, Lucille states after Meech reveals he paid the bank. When Charles returns, he confronts her about the mortgage. Charles is upset and tells Lucille to give the money back. When she explains that they can't, he becomes enraged and hands over his keys before leaving the house.[3]
Hospital lawsuit[]
Lucille, Charles, and Terry meet with Pastor Swift's niece Karen, who assesses Terry's case to determine if they can file a malpractice lawsuit. However, Charles claims that she can't be trusted, which Lucille believes is due to the fact that she's Pastor Swift's niece. They later attend baby Terry's christening.[4]
Lucille, Charles, Terry, and Karen attend a deposition with the hospital's lawyer to discuss Terry's eye and their case, but when the lawyer displays photos which indicate that Terry has been dealing with Meech, Karen decides to suspend the deposition. The hospital is making an offer for $25,000. While Charles is willing to accept the offer, Lucille wants them to be held accountable. However, if they go to trial and the jury decides against them, they could get nothing. While it would be enough to put Terry through school and get him out from under Meech's thumb, Lucille demands that they pay for their actions, regardless of Charles' input since he moved out. Later that night, she overhears Meech and Terry discussing their drug business.[5]
Lucille locks herself inside her room and refuses to come out after discovering that Terry is selling drugs with Meech. Charles arrives and begins playing his steel guitar, coaxing her to come out. Lucille feels like a failure. Charles believes that Meech is a lost cause, whereas they can still save Terry by taking the settlement money from the hospital and sending him to a school down south. The next day, they call Karen and tell her to accept the $25,000 offer. However, the offer has already been rescinded, and Charles blames her for not informing them sooner. When Terry returns home, they ask how long he's been selling drugs. Terry reveals that he's been doing so ever since Meech started, as he was tired of struggling. Lucille argues that poverty isn't a scapegoat for immorality; she's worried about Terry's soul and warns him that not even she can protect him from that.[6]
Lucille and Charles arrive at the police station to pick up Nicole after she was attacked and Darius killed, all stemming from Meech and Terry's business. Charles tells Nicole to tell the police the truth no matter what, but Lucille worries that people might come after them if Nicole says too much. Upon returning home, Charles begins packing their bags due to the fact they're no longer safe at the house, but Lucille refuses to leave, believing that they can at least save Terry, but Charles isn't interested in risking their own lives any further and takes Nicole with him. With Charles gone, Lucille reaches out to Karen to bring her back on for their malpractice case. Lucille convenes with Charles to attend Darius' funeral, where they are accosted by the boy's mother.
Lucille confronts LaWanda for lying to her about Terry selling drugs. She accuses LaWanda of doing what was convenient for her, but if Terry continues to sell drugs, he's only going to end up dead or in jail, Lucille explains. Right now, LaWanda is enabling him, and Lucille needs her to stop.[7]
Lucille and Charles learn that Karen found the nurse who was witness to the malpractice. She gave her deposition, in which she revealed to have smelled alcohol on the surgeon's breath during Terry's second surgery. Karen shared this with the hospital, who is now offering a $230,000 settlement, which the Flenorys accept. With this, Charles looks into starting a car service, but Lucille reminds him that the settlement money belongs to Terry, not that he can spend it either, Karen reveals. The money will be held in a trust until Terry turns 18, and he can't spend it any sooner unless they get permission from a judge. So Charles takes Terry and Lucille to see Jay Freedman's car service business, which he is selling. He makes about 125K annually. Charles wants this business to be Terry, which he could eventually pass down to his son. This could be Terry's way out, but Terry isn't sure if this is what he wants just yet and asks for time to think about it.[8]
