Biography[]
Representing Terry[]
Karen assesses Terry's case on a contingency basis. Terry reveals that his vision is getting worse and that his eyes get blurry. This occurred after they brought Terry back for the corrective surgery. Karen is looking to file a malpractice lawsuit, but just how long that takes can vary. The manner in which the hospital responds will tell them a lot about the seriousness of this claim, and then they can weigh the cost-benefit of pushing for more versus settling. Karen insists that she's not going to treat Terry the way the hospital did.[1]
Karen takes the Flenorys to a deposition with the hospital's lawyer to discuss Terry's eye and any possible malpractice. She advises Terry to answer only what he knows for a fact, but when the lawyer displays photos which indicate that Terry has been dealing with Meech, Karen decides to suspend the deposition. Despite his alleged activities, Karen reveals that the hospital is making an offer for $25,000. Between the photos and the fact that Terry tried to leave the hospital and fell, Karen believes they should at least consider the offer.[2]
Dropping Terry's case[]
Lucille and Charles call Karen over to tell her that they're prepared to accept the $25,000 offer the hospital made. However, Karen tells them that the offer has already been rescinded, as it had a time limit. Charles blames her for not informing them sooner and calls her a conniving rookie lawyer. Karen excuses herself and tells them that her assistant will send over the termination of representation paperwork.[3]
Finding the nurse[]
Lucille apologizes to Karen for Charles' behavior and hopes that she will bring them back on as clients. Terry's life depends on this settlement. Karen explains that even if she agrees, it will be an uphill battle. Although, there was a nurse present during Terry's second surgery, and Karen believes she may know something, but the nurse recently quit and no one knows where she is. Karen has a lead, but makes no promises.[4]
Karen informs Charles and Lucille that she found the nurse who was witness to the malpractice. Nurse Alicia Green gave her deposition, in which she revealed to have smelled alcohol on the surgeon's breath during Terry's second surgery. When Karen went to the hospital with the threat of going public, they offered a $230,000 settlement, which the Flenorys accept. Charles also apologizes to Karen for what he said to her and thanks her for all the help. Karen later hands Terry his settlement check, but the money will be held in a trust until he turns 18, and he can't spend it any sooner unless they get permission from a judge.[5]
